The thing about DeSmith vs Monty, is that DeSmith's stats were in PIT while Monty was in MTL. I haven't watched PIT, but Monty has won games, and probably had a bigger impact on MTL's wins than DeSmith had on PIT's wins

Goalies aren’t the priority we have 2 to 3 years to find a #1 goalie
Monty(Canada) and Desmith(USA) has played last World Championship so they had 2 great team in front of them pretty similar I would say. Monty: 7 GP. 1.42 Avg 0.939 Sv% and Desmith : 7Gp. 1.95 avg 0.918 Sv%. So for me with the size and age difference I would say that Monty is a no brainer going foward in MTL❤
Everything is coming up roses for the Habs. Finally. Leafs fans are gonna hate us more than ever. Just wait and see. I remember a few years ago when CTV national news cut programming to show a live image of a private jet landing at Pearson airport in "Tronna". Marcia MacMillan (I think) started reported that new Leafs coach Mike Babcock is now landing at Pearson blah, blah, blah. They would not do that if Jesus himself was landing at Trudeau to coach the Habs. Well, Babcock…gone, no cup. They now have Keefe but we have the Marty man. We have Marty!!! Leafs won't win (not with that top heavy core 4 and that terrable D). We will. And CTV will make no mention of Marty. We do not need "Tronna" media. Go Habs Go.

Montembeault earned the #1 spot with his improved play, even with an inexperienced defense last season. He also had an excellent IIHF WHC leading Canada to the championship.
Monty is an ok goalie but he will never be a number one goalie. He is just not that calibre and will never be. We just need to sit tight and wait for Jacob Fowler to be ready. 3 more years!!!

Desmith may have had better stats but his team had far better defence, this is definitely a factor.
DeSmith pretty much got blamed for Pittsburgh missing the play off last year, I don't know, maybe the stats were better, but I watched 4 or 5 games he was in net last and he pretty par with a bad Jake Allen game, so no thank you

Not so fast. Monty and de Smith haven't earned anything yet. De Smith is also too small to be a starter, which is what, 50 games? There is no storyline here. Future goaltending situation is Plan A: Monty. Plan B: one of the prospects steps up. Plan C: a trade My question is, why didn't they draft 3 goalies in 2022? He would have been ready 1 year sooner. Time is flying. Suzuki is already 24. They peak at 27.
There is a famous saying in connection with the type of analysis you used in this segment: Lies, Damn Lies and Statistics. Several comments below highlight the problem: Pittsburgh was far superior to Montreal defensively. With the teams at the World Championship being comparable, Montembeault was better than DeSmith.
Paul Byron is a good person with a great ethic AND a great Gatineau Quebecer. He's one of the players who warrant a serious look to have a second career in the nhl.
Farrel can have a LOOONG career with the habs. An economic degree can 100% help his followup career.
Byron's strengths as a player are still very much part of this team's identity. Add to that the attitude, tenacity and even the language aspect. Great to have him in addition to the Bouillon, Robidas, Burrows (even if his PP doesn't work), Poulin type folks. Hopefully we see someone like Heineman channel their inner Byron and get a few PK goals this year.
Both Monty and DeSmith are in contract years, something that was known before last season started? WOW. That's such BIG news. HUGE. MASSIVE. THIS WILL BE ON THE FRONT PAGE OF NEWSPAPERS WORLDWIDE TOMORROW, AND OUR VERY OWN HABS DIGEST BROKE THE STORY!!!!

Casey is the best but doesn't really matter …Habs need to trade Allen , Monty and Casey within 2 years …None of them are top goalies ..Habs need to draft for a top goalie which is why I was disappointed with giving Colorado the two choice draft picks …That was the only mistake that HuGo has made especially as the error was compounded with the add of another small forward….What were they thinking ???
