What to expect from the Montreal Canadiens prospects at the 2023 NHL Rookie Showcase

Inside today’s Locked on Canadiens

Scott is running solo as he looks at what we should expect heading into the first semi-meaningful hockey of the year, the Rookie Showcase in Buffalo NY!

While Juraj Slafkovsky won’t be there to grab all the attention like last year, there are still plenty of talented top prospects expected to take the ice at the Harbor Center. David Reinbacher has been loaned back to the Habs from his team in Switzerland, and Scott debates how long he should stay in North America this preseason.

Who of the big names won’t be at the showcase? Scott takes a look at some of the likely missing names from the potential roster and why they won’t be in Buffalo. Also, who from the likely returning players is going to step up in a big way? Owen Beck and Joshua Roy will have all eyes on them, but another OHL prospect is grabbing Scott’s attention as well.

Finally, the wild card prospects, who is going to be this year’s Arber Xhekaj like attention grabber? Will his brother Florian fill that role, or is someone unexpected going to step in and steal that spotlight?

  1. Seeing Nemec and Jiricek's success in the AHL, it would be a shame if Reinbacher plays in Europe.

The excitement for Fowler reminds me of Fucale. Best to wait and see.

  2. Turning 75 today 9/5. Habs fan since 1959 and Bills fan since 1961. Going to the Bill’s home opener, then the rookie showcase on Monday 9/18. Can’t wait!!!

  3. I don't thiink so. He is a first round pick. If he's good, he's going to play until the end of the training camp with more than one game.

  4. NCAA prospects can't attend Rookie Camp, even if they pay their own way. They are not allowed to miss any classes to attend any NHL camp, including Development Camp in July if they are taking summer courses.

  5. As much as Reinbacher shows A LOT of potential, I gotta a feeling we’re just gonna a see a faster / younger version of Hal Gill at the Rookie Showcase. He needs 1-2 more years to adjust to North American hockey.

  6. Can't wait for rookie camp and preseason, and yes ,don't mess with the wifi Brothers.
