OHL Weekend Notebook: October 17, 2022

The OHL Weekend Notebook recaps the weekend that was with news, information and interesting facts from both on and off the ice.

67’s win record sixth straight to start the season
The Ottawa 67’s kept right on rolling with two more wins this past weekend. Cooper Foster had a goal and an assist in a 4-1 win in Oshawa Friday night before Brady Stonehouse and Tyler Boucher both scored twice in a 6-3 win over the Guelph Storm. Nashville Predators prospect Jack Matier leads from the back end with seven points (3-4–7) and a plus-7 rating through his first six games. It’s a historic run for the Barber Poles, who are off to their best start in franchise history.

Big weekend for Barlow as Attack bounce back
The Owen Sound Attack put three straight losses in their rear-view mirror, going into Kitchener to defeat the Rangers 4-1 behind a Colby Barlow hat trick on Friday night. The top 2023 NHL Draft eligible was back at it on Saturday in Owen Sound, scoring on the power play 1:18 into overtime as the Bears defeated the Windsor Spitfires 5-4. Barlow finished Saturday’s game with a goal and two assists, joining teammate Servac Petrovsky with three points. Sophomore netminder Corbin Votary picked up his first win of the season between the pipes.

Rookies make an impact for Otters
The Erie Otters had a forgettable start to their weekend, falling 8-1 to the Flint Firebirds on Friday night at home. The silver lining came in the OHL debut of second round 2022 OHL Priority Selection choice Jacob Gibbons, who stopped 12 of 13 in his first appearance. Gibbons was back in the crease Saturday night as the Otters played host to the Saginaw Spirit and the rookie came through with 16 saves for his first OHL win. In front of him, second overall 2022 OHL Priority Selection choice Malcolm Spence had a night to remember, tying the score with 5:09 remaining before netting the OT winner on an assist from Christian Kyrou 1:31 into the extra frame to give the Otters a 4-3 win. Spence has six points (3-3–6) in seven games so far this season. The Otters were without starting netminder Nolan Lalonde this past weekend as the Columbus Blue Jackets prospect is dealing with a lower body injury.
