This is basically him saying unless Stamkos takes a HUGE (and I mean HUGE) discount, we’ll suffer, but we will have to part ways

I will be massively disappointed and upset with our front office if they don’t re-sign Stamkos. I truly don’t care what it takes to get it done, he deserves to retire in a Lightning sweater.

That being said, I think JBB will get a deal done, but I’m not pleased with the lack of communication. Do better for Stammer.

Also, the reactionaries on Twitter and r/hockey are hilarious. Here we go again lol.

I think his view is pretty reasonable, seems a lot of this frenzy could’ve been avoided if he just talked to him during the summer.

personally, I think this is flawlessly clear.. they both know and acknowledge what they want and what their goals are.. seeing how changes made end of last year and this coming season play out is the only honest answer here.. basically, we’ll see, calm the fuck down.. goodness, everyone hates a little uncertainty.. lol..

One of the issues hanstringing us (and most sucessful teams) is that you have a small number of top player chewing up the lions share of the cap space. Then you can’t afford to keep high quality depth players who are become worth more (Palat, Colton, Killer, etc…). I think there’s 100% appetite to keep Cap’n here but if he’s looking for the Matthews’ contract, that will be the problem. If he’s at least willing to stay at current levels, I see him getting re-upped long term.

“Love your sports teams – just don’t expect them to love you back”

    – Mike Lupica

I like Stamkos, he’s been great for the team and all that work in recovering from injuries is amazing. Even have one of his jerseys in my closet.

I like the Lightning – and I like what JBB has done for them.

I suspect this will work out- but – either way, I know that Stamkos will one day put the Lightning jersey on for the last time. It happens. I hope it’s after his the last game in his career – but if not, I’ll wish him well and thank him for his time here. Then wait and see how Mgmt fills that void.

Not much else we as fans can do.

See the beginning of my comment.

I understand the why, i still don’t like it. JBB is obviously using Stammer’s age and production against him if Stammer Regresses then he’s cheaper but if he doesn’t then what is he?

I would’ve liked negotiations even if it wasnt to lock in a contract at the time, set a performance target for this season if he’s over he gets contract A if he’s under he gets contract B. That way both parties can say contract talks were good and they’re dependent on this season but that they’re confident it’ll get done.

He’s dedicated his whole Career to the Bolts dont fuck it up with sour contract talks.

I mean I hate having to wait until the end of the season to sign him but it’s the smart thing to do. We changed so much this off-season, it’s a good idea to wait and see how this current team works before rushing into anything. You never know if someone is going to have a breakout year, you don’t want to commit too much before having all the information.

I have no doubt he’s staying though. Stammer knew what he was saying this morning and is simply negotiating through the media as he’s done in the past, and JBB is doing the same back at him. I wish they could’ve kept in private since it ruins the vibes, but I get both sides and I’m not truly worried about it.

I remember last time Stamkos’ contract was up, he signed with the team 1 year before Free agency!

oh no wait, he didn’t… not because the lightning didn’t offer him, but because he wanted to check out free agency.

Nobody held that against him, this time its the same, except Stamkos’ leverage is a lot less.

Feels wrong to play hardball with Stamkos after everything he’s done. Currently on a team friendly deal, and by all accounts ready for another one. Why bust his balls? Everyone wants him here. But I do trust JBB.

Bottom line this makes for a strange situation hanging over the start of the season.

Legit manager talk for “show me”. No way to treat our captain that’s meant so much to our ongoing success. Rare miss from JBB IMO
