Having a big boy on your squad to make everyone feel a little more brave is true from beer league to the NHL.
Been loving the podcast so far. Just my thoughts on Columbus: They probably feel that they've drafted all the guys that they need, so they are trying to move out of the "Acquire high picks" stage and into the "Be a good team" stage. They've already got some of their first wave of prospects starting to arrive in the NHL, and since they have Laine, Gaudreau and Werenski already, they are probably trying to supplement that so that these rookies don't arrive and play with a second from the bottom team IMO.
Also, the other thing about Proverov for them I think is that it's effectively 0 risk. They traded the first round pick that they acquired from LA (The Gavrikov trade) and are also giving up a second in order to get 2 years of Proverov at a discounted cap hit. They can then recoup most if not all of that value by turning Proverov in as a rental, since defenseman (Particularly of his quality) always get at least like a first round pick at a minimum.
I think the main point with the bag skates is just to force everyone to find their limits and push them into a mode of continuous 100% effort, to help them unlock that highest gear. Of course there's the benefit of creating camaraderie between the players but the attitude of no quitting has to be a constant mindset on the ice. Especially with the kids it's important to be able to unleash all their potential and I'm glad Riley Armstrong and the FO as well are really pushing player development as a main theme during the rebuild.
