Penguins-Sabres preview, plus Ty Smith gets placed on waivers!

It’s another Pittsburgh Penguins game day on Thursday with a matchup against te Buffalo Sabres. Hunter and Pat first discuss the lineup that the Penguins will be putting out, plus who they’ll have their eye on. They especially look at the top two lines since they’re different with Jake Guentzel out and look at how Alex Nylander can continue to try and get a spot with more strong play. They also look at what may be a preview of some of the bottom six lines (DOC and Eller, especially) and how that winger spot on the other side could still be up for grabs. After that, they dive into the Sabres lineup and who they’ll be bringing for the game. Should the Penguins mop the floor with them? How should Tristan Jarry perform? What else are the two looking to see? Finally, they look at a new third pairing and why we may already know who won the No. 6 job. All that, plus some live BREAKING NEWS, is on this edition of the Locked On Penguins podcast.

  1. The fact that Ty Smith was cut from camp only a week into it tells us where he stands with the Penguins: They think he stinks lol. And perhaps they're right, I keep seeing Derrick Pouliot comparisons and that's actually pretty accurate. A surprising d-man who seems to be getting a serious look is Ryan Shea, I thought nothing of him when they signed him but he seems to be up for consideration.

  2. when you look at the D pairings, who do you think the 3rd pairing will be? is the coaching staff's preference that ruhwedel be the 6th guy? or the 7th guy?

  3. I felt St. Ivany played a lot better in pre-season games then Smith. The Ducks or the Yotes will grab Smith who is a low cost defenseman with NHL experience.

  4. Unfortunate that its possible the Pens lose Smith for nothing on waiver claim, but like I might have mentioned, the staff wasn't go to play Smith on his off side, and I guess they just don't like him that much so it is what it is. So in essence, the Pens traded Marino just a third rd pick (Emil Pieniniemi). Hopefully he becomes something down the line. Another Hextall mistake exposed. If I had to choose who I'd rather have on the bottom right side D, I'd go with Friedman. But I am happy POJ is looking better. Hopefully he stays with the Pens and continues to get better so it will end being a decent return on the Kessel trade.

  5. So we gave up John Marino for a guy who couldn't crack the lineup and was basically now just given away? And people wonder why there were conspiracies about Hextall
