I have a British friend who lived in Canada for a couple of years a decade or so back. You cannot mention hockey to him without him mentioning Bill Barilko. The Tragically Hip embedded that man’s name into his brain. He knows almost nothing else about hockey —why would he?— but when he says it in the presence of other British people, they look at him like he’s some kind of savant to have obscure lore from a Canadian athlete from the 1950s. I find it hilarious.

The fact they genuinely never won another cup til the year he was found is bittersweet.
It also makes me think that the hockey gods and hockey curses are real.

Fun fact: 50 mission caps were given to bomber pilots in WW2 after flying that many missions. Usually it meant two tours of duty, and only the elite got them. Most crews never completed a full tour, especially earlier in the war.
