Canโt matthews claim the bonus in Arizona where he wouldnโt have to pay as much tax on as Toronto where as his salary counts against Canadian taxes? I donโt know if this is true just something I heard
The fact that he says if there's a lockout the teams not making any money makes me think you don't know what you're talking about… the Leafs would make plenty still.
Lmao a lockout happening with millions in the bank is not gonna make these guys go broke. Fuck I wouldnโt mind having 50 million in the bank and never get paid for 2 damn decades. ๐คท๐ฝโโ๏ธ๐
Right? Why pay 13 mil for someone who is in the negatives for when games get real and cannot play at all in the playoffs? Why would you destroy your team cap for non-playoff players? ๐คท๐
Isnt taxes a thing too? Living in a state where there is less income tax in offseaso (bonus payout time) vs paying in season where you are living/playing????
Bonuses are taxed at a monthly rate tho. For instance lets say you make 12,000 dollars a year, and then you get a 10,000 bonus at the end of the year, on that big paycheck it will multiply your bonus out and you will be taxed at a rate of 120,000 per year. Instead of 22,000 dollars a year. Protected during lockouts but screwed over hard on taxes…. idk if its that great.
Heโs fucking terrible for someone being paid that muchโฆโฆa bitch one would sayโฆโฆ.the last guy I would want to look down the bench and see when itโs time to go to war
This will be matthews last contract in Canada. He hasnt made anything nesr that due to tax. He loses 53.3% here and is set to take home less than Tkachuk every year.

Whit is completely right. The ultra rich are rich because of what they do with the money they make, not what they make
Idc what anyone says. He's slightly overpaid and is DEFINITELY fucking his team over by taking the most he could get. No way the leafs win a cup.
Be really interesting when people stop going to games because of ticket prices.
Matthews is not worth more than McDavid.
I believe Mackinnon got $12.6m because he won a Stanley cup. If he didnโt, McDavid would have still been the highest paid player.

The leafs will never win a cup w matthews contract itโs as simple as that
Bizz no
As a Leafs fan, what matthews did was bs.. who the hell is this guy. He's good, but he's no Allstars. I can tell u that.
This salary cap constraint is really going to mess things up in the NHL in the next 3 years or less. It's already happening.
Leafs need to draft Canadian born players these days. Same with all Canadian teams or go European. Drafting Americans isn't an option anymore.
Why would you want to get paid in signing bonuses? Uh, Time Value of Money?
How people in 2023 don't understand even the most basic financial concepts is beyond me.
Yeah I always wondered about the reason they brought a salary cap in. Makes sense owners would look out for themselves.

No movement clauses are the biggest issue in hockey contracts.

it amazes me that a 4th line goon bissonette, gets this much airtime aand is on Nat'l TV…what a joke
Also makes it buyout proof

Theres a tax loophole in ontario where he only gets taxed once when he gets the money in a lump sum.

Also Sebastian Aho contract.
Overrated and overpaid. Matthews hasn't done shit to get that amount of money.
Whits face when Biz said $122 million by 30๐ absolutely disgusted hahahaha
This is cringy knowing what they make even with lockouts,
Can I just ask why were filtering the word die?
Today I learned that there's a section of Maple Leafs fan that think it's Matthews' duty to get paid less to help the team out.
Excuse me what? This is his career. He don't owe the team **
