Blue Jackets are apparently trying to move a defenseman. Their RHD and cap hit: Severson (6M), Gudbranson (4M), Peeke (2.7M), Boqvist (2.6M).

Seravalli: “Likely centered around Boqvist, Bean, and to a lesser extent – based on minutes – Peeke”

    – Severson and Gudbranson have some type of trade protection.
    – Boqvist is 23, 5’11’’, Swedish. – 2 years left on his deal
    – Peeke is 25, 6’3’’ not Swedish – 3 years left on his deal

  2. I remember the 2018 draft when Adam Boqvist was being strongly considered as the guy the Canucks would draft, what with him being Swedish and all that. Turns out he was drafted right after Hughes instead, thanks Benning! (I mean, he got this one right…broken clock and all that)

How canuck would it be that we ens up trading garland, 2nd for gudbranson? He waves because he really likes the city. Oh man.

If they want cap flexibility (which is what the above states), how are we in s position to be a trade partner with them?

We can’t take on any salary at all which is reportedly what they are looking for in a trade partner…

‘*Take Garland*’ means they actually take on more salary rather than the other way around.

  5. They probably want more flexibility because none of those players are worth those cap hits.

    Stay away.

  6. Beau (whatever % retained to make it work) for Peeke.

  7. Listen..any of you actually considering trading Garland (a decent middle 6 play driver) for an overpaid replacement level defenceman (all of these players) then you are Jim Benning.

You can’t just look at RHD and say “I’ll take it!”

I’ve been saying since the summer that Columbus has a log jam and we should look at trading Podkolzin for Peeke.

Pod and Marchenko played together in Russia and had chemistry. We need to get value for him before it’s completely gone.

Peeke you hope is finally that long-term partner for Hughes, still only 25 but a pretty steady stay at home guy and excellent on PK.

I’d say no to Boqvist. He’s shown offensive upside but defensively kind of a mess still at 23 and he’s not going to see any offensive opportunities with Hughes and Hronek.

I am interested in Peeke. Physical and skates well but his acceleration is kind of meh. He was called upon to play top 2-3 minutes in CBJ the last few seasons with injuries and trades (led their D group in TOI by 200 minutes last year) but has struggles or at least hasn’t excelled being a top guy but he wouldn’t be asked to be a top guy here. Though there’s definitely debate if he has top 4 upside still or not.

With how active we have been they’re 100% calling.

Garland and Beau both make sense to me as someone to move.

I have no idea what Columbus would want in return, but I think Peeke is a guy we should look at. He can handle big minutes and could be a good fit with Hughes, I’m not super familiar with any of these guys (besides Gudbranson 🤢) though as I haven’t watched many Columbus games the last couple of years.

If we can move one of our forwards who are borderline on making the team, then it’s worth a shot, but I wouldn’t add anything unless they’re taking on excess salary.

Good Finnish sir, can I interest you in a middle six winger? He’s French and costs 4.15M.

TLDR: Cross out Severson (new acquisition for CBJ), Gudbranson is a non option he has to be moved to a tanking team with a sweetener or something. If the Canucks have any interest my money is on Peeke not Boqvist.

Boqvist is more of a smaller offensive guy getting tons of Ozone starts (63-74%) in the past 2 years and some PP time which certainly helped him have a nice career pts % at 0.43. The biggest issue I have with him is it looks like he can’t stay healthy whatsoever. He’s in the 2nd year of a 3 year 2.6M deal. I doubt the Canucks brass are seriously looking at Boqvist simply due to the fact all we hear from this team is that they want to be harder to play against and having acquired Hronek they got an older, better version already.

Peeke is the larger defensive type and looking at his Dzone starts (68-69%) with lots of PK time and no PP time it’s not a surprise to me that his career pts % is pretty low at 0.17, of course you could have the chicken or egg debate with him though. He fits the mold of being tougher to play against being the bigger body that throws his weight around and plays in the toughest minutes. Don’t mistake him for a fighter though as the few fights I watched him in he decisively lost each of them. The risk with him is he is in year 1 of a 3 x 2.75M deal that was signed in Sep 2022. *IF* we got him and he works with Hughes or fits onto the 2nd pair to bump Hronek up to the first then that’s potentially a great deal for us. But if he turns out to be *just a guy* and he really is as poor as his CBJ numbers show him to be then it’ll be another crummy contract that weighs us down and makes it hard to make trades.
