Ton of positives to take away from this one.

  2. Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory 🙃

  3. ghg1999

If this is a sign of our goaltending… celebrini is ours!

  4. bloblob37

Yeah we deserve to lose after such a shit OT powerplay

  5. fortytwoanswers

Very fun game where we kept up with an ostensible division leader and made it tough for them despite outmatched firepower. It’s going to be a fun year!

  6. DrLivingst0ne

What a game. Entertaining. Good effort. Good coach. Good rebuild.

I vote Xhekaj for Habs MVP.

  7. Minato_is_God

Fun game despite the loss, indiscipline and our flaccid overtime powerplay cost us.

Newhook-Dach-Slaf was a possession machine, Newhook specifically had some shifty moves to keep possesion on the wall which impressed me.

  8. gingeshady

Lots of good things in that one.
Special teams look like the bug bear again for what seems like the 10th year in a row.
Outscoring a team 4-1 at 5 on 5 should normally mean a regulation win 99/100

  9. bcgrappler

For a team that is projected as bottom 10 at best, this was a great showing.

Slaf, dach, Cole, newhook and did I mention juraj Slafkovsky.

  10. Lordsokka

Two great kid lines, disappointing performance by Allen and our special teams when down by 1 man.

    Slaf was great!

  11. Gros_Picoppe

It’s at least going to be an entertainment year.

  12. A_WHALES_VAG

Was fun, major issues with the man up tho… as is traditon.

Honestly Allen was great but also awful and really the reason we even ended up in OT (where he was really good).

I have a feeling goaltending is going to cost us alot of games this year

  13. godzirah

Lots of positives, but man, if we really want to move forward with this group, something needs to change with our PP. I really think
Burrows needs to go and Marty brings in his own guy. It’s inexcusable to have that poor of a display 4 on 3 in OT. The guys looked completely lost on what to do that whole PP and we settled for 2 outside shots.

  14. TheFakeSteveWilson

Guy Boucher on one end and Alex fucking Burrows chewing on crayons on the other. Fucking Christ.

  15. OpenMouthKissedHorse

That was certainly a game. Our special teams cost us that game imo. The 6v5 and OT was brutal to watch.

  16. Baikken

Caufield goal, Newhook welcoming party, X fight, one of Slaf’s best games and a dramatic game for a season opener.

Not salty at all. Great game!

  17. ObverseNebula

At least scoring goals doesn’t seem to be an issue?

  18. whiteslinky

Gallagher is the slowest skater out there

  19. RoosterVking

We go 3-0 📈. Goal is called back, they go up 3-2, with a terrible 2nd period from us 📉. We go 5-3 at the beginning of the 3rd 📈. They tie the game, OT looking good for them 📉. Allen makes insane saves, we get a PP, 4-3 for 1:30 of OT 📈. We do jack shit on the PP, Suz misses his penalty shot, and we just score none of them 📉.

Emotions were on a ride today, and it ended with a crash at LaRonde

  20. The___Colonel

Proud of the boys. Taking a ‘cup contender’ down to the last round of a shootout as a rebuilding team is a win in my books. All the young guns put out a great effort.

Holy smokes that second line is money!

  21. G_skins31

Not Suzukis best game. That line got pinned in our zone a lot

  22. Boejereta

Easily slaf’s best game to date. I hope they staple him to dach this year

  23. ignitek

Don’t really care about the L. Slaf’s best game so far, Newhook 2 goals, Dach continues to look incredible, and Caufield netted a goal. If we play like this all year we won’t have a top 10 pick.

  24. thebriss22

This year is very whatever but if Monty or Dobes are not it for goaltending, we will have to trade for a decent goalie in the next couple of years lol

  25. Tristkits

I’m still livid about that “tripping” penalty newhook took. Nowhere near domis legs it got him in the middle of the pants. That’s when the game originally got away from us

  26. DarthLordDonkey

Newhook-Dach-Slafkovsky is going to be a really, really fun 2nd line as long as they’re together

  27. Habsfan_1984

The Leafs are likely going to be the top team in the East and we just made them fight a claw like crazy for that win. Sure there’s some negatives from the game but overall I seen a lot of positives. Going forward though we need to find a way to improve our special teams. I hate not scoring on a 4 on 3 in OT and we are wayyy to soft when we play a man down. We gave up 3 goals down a man and that can’t happen.

I’ll end it by saying the top 6 played well. Great first game from Slaf.

  28. om_nama_shiva_31

Lots of positives but the Gally line was useless and the OT power play was inexcusably bad, like they didn’t want to be there

  29. flepine44

That was messy but fuck this team is fun

  30. Argh games that are so close always sting the hardest. Overall, a good game, even though special teams definitely let us down. Allen looked weak on some goals, but kept us in the game at times, especially in OT.

Newhook great, Dach great, Slaf coming onto his own.

That 6 on 5 was way too passive tho.

EDIT: quick shout out to Suzuki’s improvement in faceoffs, that’s gonna be pretty key for us going forward.

  31. Frectozhae

    This was fun!

    – Slafkovsky was absolutely awesome tonight, that line was our best, and when Dach woke up in the third period, that was something to see.

    – Rare bad game against the Leafs from Anderson, but that line needs a change. It doesn’t work at all.

    – That third line of Gallagher, Pearson and Monahan is awful. Not enough speed. They need Anderson for sure with them.

    – Really didn’t love the game of a few of our d-men, especially Harris who couldn’t make a pass for his life. Xhekaj was awesome tho, the best defenceman tonight.

    – Allen is going to keep us in the bottom, so I don’t mind a tank commander.

  32. ukrainianhab

    *BAD*

    – you have a two goal lead twice and lose it. You have a two goal lead deep in the third and give up two goals with the other team having an empty net. Needless to say, bad bad bad.

    – Way too passive. My best comparison would be a prevent defense in football, not closing down any of the leafs players and giving up the top of the defensive zone way too easily. Not good and overly conservative.

    – Allen has to have some of those.

    – I don’t like looking too much into the future. But dear god, avert your eyes, Gallagher heart and all, is really bad out there can’t even skate.

    – The Pearson, Monahan, Gallagher line wasn’t good.

    – Suzuki off night.

    – No idea what the idea was on the 4 on 3

    – It was a good game but admit it we rly all wanted to beat the leafs badly lol

    *GOOD*

    – A lot of skilled plays by the Habs tonight. First one that comes to mind is Ylonen goal, how many players take a shot there instead of waiting it out? Perfect poise and then roofs it. Another, Evans opening goal how many just jam that into the pad instead of getting it up in the net. Really good skill.

    – Slaf was excellent. Noticeable in the first with some small plays but then the 2nd an absolute sublime assist to newhook with not a ton of room.

    – Newhook with two goals. Well that’s good.

    – Yeah Habs might lose a lot this year but if Caufield drops Gs all year it’ll be fun af

    – Xhekaj absolutely mucking reeves.

    – Dach possession monster.

  33. AcanthocephalaGreen5

Here’s what I took from the game.

    Positives:

    -Slaf looked great

    -Newhook deuces wild

    -Cole gets 1/50

-Xhekaj bounced back well after that misconduct

    -Inject Dach/Slaf/Newhook into my veins

    Negatives:

    -Powerplay (surprise, surprise…)

-Allen looked shaky, though he did get shelled

    -Habs still showing their inexperience

  34. CheetahLynx83

We were winning. By 2 goals. Twice… FML

Fuck Auston Matthews, and fuck the Leafs

  35. slafyousilly

Fun game, I’ll take it as a nice stepping stone to the season

  36. DrunkenRedittor

Was easily the best game by slafkovsky ever.

  37. jo_maka

This was a perfect game when looking at a longer term.

The players we were hoping to have improved did. The momentum shifts were so crazy that rookies typically only learn of those in tapes. This time, they were in one. There are tons of small stuff our players didn’t do right that can be broken down in a video session. And the Leafs had to mount a serious comeback for them to finally win in shoot outs.

    This was a good game.

  38. Dawildone

The better team on paper tonight were by far the Leafs and we almost got away with the game. Allen got a decent game with 42 SOG. Not sure about Anderson with Suz and Caufield. Unfortunately, we don’t have a lot of options just yet. We saw good stuff coming from Slaf and Newhook. I love Dach and he looks phenomenal with the puck on the ice.

3rd line is really weird to look at. Gally is getting slower by the year and Pearson is a BIG question mark. It sucks for Monahan to be in this position because he has way more abilites than those guys. We’ll see when or if Dvorak gets back. Pretty solid 4th line. Pezzeta can stay on the side. PP is still our biggest weakness. This season will be interesting and a point is a point.

  39. BigBoy990

If every game is like this I legit wouldn’t care if we lost 82 this year LMAO

  40. CreateorWither

Our D looked inexperienced at times which they are. Guhle especially I hate to say panicked with the puck a few times.

    The Dach line looked stellar.

    Suzuki won 64.7% of faceoffs.

    Cole scored.

Allen kept us in it in OT

    Wifi tossed Reeves.

    Lots of positives

  41. Sensitive_Ladder2235

The one thing that stood out above all else in this game was the look on Reaves face after he fought Jacko.

“Yup, kids the real fuckin deal.”

That was the look of a real heavyweight champ relishing an opportunity to fight a real challenger.

    The battle will be legendary.

  42. UniverseHelpDesk

Great game, but it’s obvious that we will need a goaltender for the long run.

We need a consistent and skilled goaltender. Allen does decent, I don’t buy the Montembeault hype, even though he can be great sometimes.

If Primeau isn’t the guy, we need to find real long-term heir to Carey. Hofer, Wolf, Askarov, Wallstedt, whoever, but we need one.

That’s a game we would have won with a Carey../
