Breaking down the good and bad from the Habs’ season opener | HI/O Show

In this episode, our panelists — Montreal Gazette columnist Stu Cowan, former Canadiens defenceman and assistant coach Rick Green, and Andrew Berkshire — join host Jessica Rusnak to break down the Canadiens’ wild season opener against the Toronto Maple Leafs.

The panel also gives rapid-fire responses on how many goals some Canadiens players will score this season, including Alex Newhook, Cole Caufield, Nick Suzuki and Juraj Slafkovsky.

  1. Thanks for giving me a chat about the Habs first game. I feel that the team needs better goaltending. Any time a team gets 5 goals, should mean 2 points on the board.

  2. Rick Green and Craig Ludwig were one of the best shutdown teams I've ever watched Habs fan all my life

  3. That was a very good commentary. I’m impressed that the Habs scored goals, “was”worried that Xhekaj would just fight for the fun of it, which he didn’t! Ghule was hit from behind, and Allen made some nice saves. The 6 on 5 was had for almost 5 mins with no pick clearing. Great game

  4. Jake Allen played his best hockey when he was a clear # 2 to Carey Price. That's when he's comfortable. When he's in the running for the # 1 position, he never plays well. So let's make him a clear # 2 to Sam Montembeault and he'll play great. No stress. I get the feeling that Brendan Gallagher will be a major headache for the Canadiens brass. Cole Caufield gets 52 this year, Slaf gets 20.

  5. I'm just saying, if Reaves could get a player like Arber of the ice by getting him to fight then that's a win for Toronto and Reaves would be doing his job because Arber is a lot more valuable to his team than Reaves is. They say Reaves didn't want to fight him again after they came out of the box because I think Arber was willing to go again with him but Reaves probably declined.

But if Reaves is smart he should want to go at him to get a player like Arber of the ice based on what I explained earlier, Arber has to pick his spot on when to fight like Stu said.

  6. Something I would like to see the panel chat about is that 3rd line in the opening game. Why have 3 veterans play together? How does that help the development of the youngsters and of this hockey team. I would suggest that development of the youngsters is priority # 1, not wins. And that the older players are there to mentor the younger players. So let's put in more youngsters, have them develop (yes, with a ton of mistakes), get rid of some of the older guys (sorry Gally) and get better draft picks. Re-building is still on for another 3 years away so let's rebuild ! And let's forget about the playoffs for a while.

  7. Totally agree regarding Gallagher. Too slow. Monahan's talent is waisted when he plays with Gally. I think it showed in the first game against the Leafs.

  8. they took away the PP goal then Domi takes a dive. it could have easily been a win

  9. I'm a Bruins fan, and I say Montreal looked good! Could be a really good season for you finally

  10. I agree with Andrew 150%, that rule needs to go. Takes away from the game of hockey, slows the game down. If the officiating misses it, they miss it. They say the game is so fast these days yet here we are slowing it down because an official missed an offside play. Move on. Thought it was a great game overall, I mean we took Toronto to the mat when we're not suppose to even be in the playoffs. On to the next game! 🙂 GHG

  11. I was surprised no one talking but them putting Armia on waivers

  12. Dach was an absolute monster, he has clearly picked up where he left off, Suzuki looked good at times, but man is he slow, Newhook is gonna fit so well on this team, Allen was phenomenal for most of the game, if it wasn't for him would have lost big time.
