Ross Johnston Leaves the New York Islanders After Being Claimed by the Anaheim Ducks

Ross Johnston is no longer a member of the New York Islanders. The Anaheim Ducks claimed the veteran enforcer off waivers. We look at Johnston’s legacy with the Isles and who will take over his role on the team. Plus, with one roster spot now open, who do the Isles call up to take that spot?

Plus, we have the latest from practice including the return to the ice of Cal Clutterbuck and the line combinations on the power play and at even strength. A new player was skating on the top line with Mathew Barzal and Bo Horvat but is this temporary or long-term?

And we look ahead to Adam Pelech’s season. What is his expected role and what does he have to do to have a successful 2023-24 NHL season.

All this and more on today’s Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

  1. Could we trade for Franklin Square's Shane Pinto? We need a local, hometown kid on the Island😊

  2. WELCOME BACK. Of course useless lou favourite holmstrom gets the call-up instead of say ish or dufour who could add some scoring. And score one for you know who. One of his dumb ass contracts is off the books. Quacks have plenty of cap space and aren't even trying to win so move makes sense. Should have ltir'd palmieri. Oh well 21will be out by game 10. Isles now have $1,388,375 in cap space. And ross's legacy-lumbering around out there no threat to score. He was a typical you know who isle.

  3. Lou Loserillo is a joke of a GM. The owners are to blame at this point for buying into Lou’s bullshit.

  4. Lou chose Ross over Matt Martin the washed bum. It really is mind boggling how stupid and arrogant of a GM Lou is. I hate him so much.

  5. I don't care what anyone of you say. This team is going to be pushed around like a freshman on the first day of high school. Matt martin will be out on an injury before you know it. Clutterbuk is next. Team will be taking runs at your 1st line without any fear whatsoever. See how that works out for us.

  6. The Islanders were 30th on the PP last year, only .2 points higher than 32nd place team, Philly.
They were 1-5 in the shootout and equally dreadful in 3 on 3 OT play.
I think Iskhakov could help earn some extra points for the Islanders by his play in these three areas. I'm not sure Holmstrom moves the needle in any of these three areas.
Dufour would help on the PP, but not as likely in the shoot out or OT.
Maggio could help in more than one area (PP and OT, maybe shoot out as well).
Yes Holmstrom might be more responsible defensively and experienced than these other three prospects, but is more defensively responsible what the Isles need with the best goalie (or one of the best) tandems in the league and an atleast average defence core in a defensive system, along with players bent more towards their own zone than scoring.
If you don't go out on the limb, you'll never get the fruit.
    Just my 2 cents.
