look here is how fighting works in the nhl if you want to take off the helmets before hand you do so and it is common courtesy for the other guy to do so as well also the shield doesn't even do anything blows are coming from the side and under usually not straight on
Hartnell obviously isn't a pussy. He's a tough player, and he's an old school player like Howe, lots of skill but still willing to drop the gloves. But I *have* seen him go at it a few times and he refused to take his helmet off. In this fight he didn't really have time, but its kind of hockey code to take your helmet off if you're wearing a shield.
