GAME RECAP: Penguins vs. Calgary (10.14.23) | Guentzel Has Three Point Night

The Pittsburgh Penguins took on the Calgary Flames at home on Saturday night. The 1st period had a combined five penalties between the two clubs making it difficult for either team to get their lines rolling. The scoreboard remained empty through the end of the period. The silent trend continued into the second period. Battling end to end, both goaltenders made huge saves. But with 2 minutes left in the 2nd, Calgary struck first. Matt Coronato scored on a one-timer to make the score 1-0. The Penguins regrouped during the intermission and came out firing. 18 seconds after the faceoff to start the 3rd, Bryan Rust bounced a puck off the back of the goaltender to tie the game. Only 30 seconds later, Reilly Smith would also get the puck past the Calgary netminder. Evgeni Malkin joined Smith on a 2v1 to help gain the lead. But the Penguins were not done. Off the faceoff, Sidney Crosby won the puck back to Kris Letang and quickly passed it to Jake Guentzel waiting on the backdoor to tap the puck in and make the score 3-1 in favor of Pittsburgh. Later in the period, Calgary tried to clear their zone but the puck was kept in by Smith. Smith drop passed the puck to Malkin who made the score 4-1. Calgary was able to get a second goal minutes later but that was not enough for the comeback. Bryan Rust got the empty net goal to seal the deal and the Penguins won with a final score of 5-2.
