I’ve always assumed that ‘shrug emoji’ is the actual answer to what a player was thinking in any given play.

  2. Was going through last night’s postgame stuff this morning ([link here](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S0IFY7wMfPo)) since I’m usually asleep before it’s posted and got a good laugh out of this.

I’m happy seeing Matthews push back against some of the reporters’ dumber questions more.

  3. He was probably thinking “I’m just going to try to get the puck on net, maybe it’ll go in, maybe someone gets a rebound, idk” on the play. I swear none of these reporters have actually played hockey, every hockey player knows that unless the goalie is way out of position, which Gus was not, then the wraparound probably isn’t going in. It’s very hard to raise the puck, and goalies nowadays seal the lower posts exceptionally well. It’s just a jam play to get the puck into the crease area, he happened to score.

I love how dead ass serious he is with questions. Specially when its to dumb questions from Steve Simmons

  5. Neutral-President

What a moronic question, asked by someone who appears to have never played a sport.

  6. Judge_Rhinohold

I am actually surprised that Matthews wanted to stay here and deal with so many dumbass reporters asking stupid questions.

As long as Auston doesn’t have an injury he is on pace for a 246 goal season.

My conservative prediction is he only gets 200 goals.

  8. BlackEagle0013

“I’m just here so I don’t get fined.”

I would also have taken this answer:

“That-that-that’s a good question. What-what happens is, the-the-the defenceman has-has the puck first. And-and-and the winger will try to steal it. That’s when the d-defenceman coughs the puck up in-into the stick of the winger. So what I do is, I-I start takin’ the puck from the winger, unless he gives the puck to-to s-somebody else, in which case, I-I try to take the puck from that person.”

Matthews doing his best Shoresy impressions:
“why don’t I just take a clapper from behind the net and see if it goes in Steve?”

    Steve: “Just intui..”

    Matthews: “huh?”

    Steve: …

    Matthews: “so dumb”

I love how sometimes he’ll make the media feel stupid for their extremely dumb questions.

  12. Odd_Distribution3267

I’ll start listening in playoffs , great start hopefully keeps going

Thinking back on my own days playing sports, it actually feels like your body is ahead of any conscious thoughts sometimes

But even if you didn’t understand that, the whole play was like half a fucking second lol. Obviously he’s not going to explain some complicated thought process.

  14. kelticslob

Journo even gave the answer he wanted to hear after being embarrassed

  15. BackhandQ

It’s a perfectly legitimate question. Not sure why he doesn’t just answer.

  16. DangleWho

It happened in literally one second no time to think you just do it. What a stupid question to ask.

  17. silentswift7

If I was him I’d just laugh at every question some of these people ask, that would be the answer.

  18. burningxmaslogs

He should copy Kyle Busch and say “I’m here so I don’t get fined” lol

  19. ComfortableUpset8787

I get he is annoyed at a lot of these questions, but I think he could have just given a basic “get the puck in deep, saw a small opening behind the net and went for it and luckily it worked out”

It really wasn’t that dumb if a question and easily answered superficially.

  20. SetBrilliant2109

I feel this year is our best chance to win the cup! Just need to trade for some heavy D before playoffs.

  21. Bartizanier

Reporter: “what were you thinking while x play was happening”

So you’ve literally never played sports?

  22. Grouchy-Bug5223

Dumb questions get dumb answers. I’d Have to be a smart ass about it. “Uhh, sometime between when I had the puck behind the net and when I scored probably idk”

  23. yourmomsfaveaccount

Have these reporters ever played a hockey game before? Or any sport? Like what are they expecting for an answer?

  24. Beersmoker420

hope some reporters continue to ask this for no reason in the future as a joke

  25. TheOGgreenman

Instead of just awkward facial expressions and mumbling, I’d love for him to reply with something smart ass, or a “you’re kinda stupid” glare. Harness your inner Torts!!lol. Or answer the dumb question with an answer for dummies. Break the entire “sequence” down into step by step explanations: “first, I got the puck, then I skated kinda fast, then I sped up a bit, then I looked around out to the corner of my eye……

This needs to be the greatest meme gif of all time.
