Dynamic Play From Jesper Bratt And Jack Hughes, But Devils Drop Disjointed Game At Home

For the second straight game Jack Hughes and the high flying offense looked great… once they got going. On a back-to-back opening the season, the Devils struggled to find there offensive rhythm, and even with Akira Schmid playing excellent – found themselves down 2-0 in the second period.
A chaotic 20-minute session filled with seven total penalties and three Devils goals thrust them into a third period lead.
But with all but one defenseman spending time in the Penalty Box Neew Jersey coughed up the lead, and following OT, the Win went to the Yotes on a Penalty Shootout.
For a young team, with championship goals, consistent and penatly free hockey needs to be the cornerstone of their success.

  1. Stay the course and just clean up on the pk, and focus on simplifying the forward lines letting them gel the next 3 games. It’s a learning curve for Luke, and Holtz has looked better and more confident

  2. Fitzgerald said last year that they "mishandled" Holtz. He then said they see # 10 as a future core piece, and yet Ruff is managing Holtz the EXACT SAME way as last year..top line pairing to start… bottom 6 demotion, and mysteriously diminishing TOI when the season begins. The pre-season lineup had some chemistry and some goals…Ruff added Mercer because Nico and Dawson "know each other and have great chemistry"…imho, the last two nights, that line looked like they met for the first time at the pre-game skate.
The only explanation I can come up with is Ruff hates Holtz, either as a player or as a person…he NEVER says anything positive about him and during interviews, if Holtz name comes up, Ruff's body language and expression changes. It reminds me of Moneyball when the GM and manager argue about the player at 1st base.
If you are going to tell the kid this is your make it or break year, and then only give him 10-12 mins a game to prove it, do the kid a favor and trade him to a team that will develop him, rather than ruin his livelihood like Ruff is doing or give him an honest shot.

  3. Devils have played some terrible 5 on 5 to begin the season.
3 points out of that hot garbage is quite the haul.
Time to clean it up boy's
