Meyers Sent Down, Tufte Placed on Waivers. Why the Continued Love Affair With MacDermid?

We know his teammates love him. We know he’s an imposing figure on the ice. We don’t know why the Colorado Avalanche continue with the Kurtis MacDermid experiment. And what the Avs are doing now with MacD is truly an experiment. His main position will be forward. Something he has never done on a regular basis.

MacDermid might not be in the starting lineup come Wednesday night when the Avs take on the Los Angeles Kings. Andrew Cogliano seems to be trending in the direction of he will be ready. If that is the case then MacDermid takes a back seat.

But if some other team likes what they saw out of Riley Tufte during his preseason with the Avs and wants to claim him, they can scoop him up and using him will no longer be an option for the Avalanche if MacDermid struggles at the position and injuries occur.

We also dive into league awards and make our selections for some of the bigger ones. The catch? We can’t pick Avalanche players.

  1. Let me preface this comment by saying I like Dahlin but man the hype on that kid coming into the draft was absurd. Kid actually had a movie like trailer hyping him up. Have you guys listened to Makar's scouting highlight video? A guy on it made a bold prediction that Makar would blow Dahlin's doors off.

  2. Lol if I recall correctly I had McD penciled in the LW4 slot when submitting our lines to the show comments a few weeks back… 🙂
What McD brings to the table is the guarantee MacK doesn’t feel like if he doesn’t go chuck knuckles no one will. And that’s short and long term value.
We’ve always had those guys around: Laperriere, C. McLeod, J. Odgers, Scott Parker, and to a lesser extent guys like Eric Lacroix, Dave Reid, and Dan Hinote. Gotta have the enforcer just in case.

  3. I'm all for Tuft too, however maybe things behind the scenes are a little bit different. Maybe MacDermid might be a part of future trade and management does want a young player like Tuft riding the pine where his game can be developed. They know they might need to put the trigger on Back up goalie or a good 6 or 7 defenseman but for now its put on hold to seen how the start goes. I hope Tuft clears

  4. I can't say mcdermit should be playing over tufte but I'd much rather mcdermit playing 4-5 minutes on the fourth line over him playing defense and being a liability

  5. I do, like McDermott as I did the Sheriff of old, but not enough to send Tufte to waivers. I believe we need him now at the beginning of the season to fill out that fourth line.

  6. I think barkov is the next perennial selke winner.

Chris you were so close on my bad prediction of a possible jack winner. I was thinking Cronin

  7. With tufte we could have rolled 4 lines, or at least been close. It’s confusing why you wouldn’t want to get back to that when that’s what you won the cup on, and pretty much every team that wins the cup rolls 4.

  8. Thank you so much, Chris, for your comments on the never-ending MacDermid saga. I could not agree more with you!

  9. 8:05 preach Kyle!!! Idk why McDermid gets such a long leash when he has actively hurt the team on most nights that he plays. The point about how we are more physical now is such a great point cause literally the whole 3rd line is now just grit, we don’t need an enforcer on the 4th line anymore

  10. I agree 100% with Chris in regards to McDermid. I would rather have a real hockey player on the club than a marginal player. My theory is that he is so well loved by his teammates that they are afraid to let him go. Furthermore, I think that Bednar loves him because his career was somewhat similar. I think McDermid hasn’t been the same since Lucic, I believe, beat the crap out of him.

  11. Look for, when a defensman goes down, McDermid goes back to the blue line and Tufte comes up. I worry about both Manson and Byram getting injured early. You have to have a player like McDermid as a deterent to keep the opposition goons from taking out one of your star players.
