  1. The Hurricanes are without an AHL team because they are a notoriously bad partner for an AHL team. The Charlotte Checkers told them to kick rocks not that long ago and became affiliated with Florida despite Raleigh being right up the road from Charlotte. The root of the issue is that the Hurricanes organization has zero desire to win at the AHL level. Yes their farm team won back to back Calder Cups but that was more in spite of the Hurricanes not because of the Hurricanes. There's even a story out there that the Hurricanes threatened to fire the Chicago Wolves coach during the Calder Cup final because the Hurricanes wanted to him to ice a team more conducive to player development rather than the best possible roster to win the Calder Cup. For an independently owned AHL team they are radioactive. These teams still need to sell tickets and generate revenue to keep the lights on. Winning will always sell better than player development. The AHL's purpose is player development but you can still win at the same time.

  2. Very considerate of SDPN to start the Oilers discussion with a better help ad. Their fans will skip to that and get the help they need.

  3. As a Winnipeg Jets fan i can tell you that we are all very excited about this team and the new additions from the PLD trade. We are aware we need some adjustments on D to be a real contender but theres a common consensus that weve never been this deep before. Also awful take on PLD. He was an RFA and apparently wanted to go to 1 team only. Then it went to 2. And then 3 only. And finally went to kings. He did us dirty and to play it off so casually compared to when it was ongoing and you guys commented is wild lol… ps . Best thing about being a jets fan is always being a dark horse 😉

  4. About the Hurricanes and Wolves thing the reason they were cut off guard was because they had another year on the deal between them and the wolves.

  5. When the yotes were in Gila River I got into the BMW Lounge for a couple games. Fantastic experience. The food was incredible, and I got to fist bump the team going on and off the ice in between periods.

  6. Michael Andlauer isn't from Toronto. He was born in France and raised in Montreal. He did go to York University and started his first business there but I'm almost positive he was raised a Habs fan

  7. You guys should look up the new jerseys the refs in the SPHL are wearing this year. They put the orange stripe across the chest of the jersey. Looks very odd in my opinion.

Also SCREW local blackouts! I have Sling, and ESPN and without a cable subscription to Comcast I cannot watch any Blackhawks games that are broadcasted from NBC Sports Chicago. Definitely didn’t want to see Bedard and Matthews play each other. Laaaaaaaaaame.

Long time listener. Keep up the good work guys!

  8. Just to clarify a few things on the Hurricanes, They did not choose this season to not have an AHL team, the wolves told them we are doing independent, end of story, and I can imagine its pretty tough to try to create an AHL team out of thin air in 6 months. They did try to do so, but the timeline was just too quick.

Did the Hurricanes management know ahead of time, I cant say. Should they have tried harder to improve relations with the Charlotte Checkers back when they were the affiliate, almost certainly. As far as I can tell, in many ways the tensions with the Checkers were similar to the Wolves, a constant struggle between the AHL team wanting to play their best players to bring fans and have a better team, and the NHL team wanting (and in many ways going way too far) to get their prospects played for development.

  9. Three of the biggest nostalgia stars for the Leafs are Tucker, Domi and Wendel Clark 😂

Of course this city likes fighting what the heck Steve? 😂

  10. LFR will be great tonight. Where was the defense on the Perry goal? There was no Leafs near him and he was barely skating.

  11. OH no…Jesse no…everyone wants MacDermid off the Avs lol (by everyone I mean 90% of Avs fans, analysts, and journalists)

  12. Such an old outdated comment that Tom Dunden is cheap!! You are applying Karmonos and Ron Francis philosophy to the newer ownership. The AHL affiliate is a crappy situation, what do you suggest? The reason why Chicago decided to go independent is because they did not want to play the Hurricanes prospects or got mad that we called up some from AHL. Nice try to speak with a Southern accent- but it was a miss.

  13. Lilejgren Robertson to Calgary for zadorov 50 percent retained save Brodie for another even bigger trade like pesce or someone else

  14. Most Canes fans I have heard from unanimously hate the move to not have an AHL team. There’s real concern it alienates prospects from wanting to come to the NHL or affects development, etc.

  15. PLD said on the empty Netters podcast that he wanted long term in Winnipeg and they didn’t want to give it to him and that’s why he wanted out 1:13:59

  16. I'm an advanced stats guy, but I think sometimes we can forget that the game is played by emotional human beings lol, when you have a guy on the team who you love, who pumps you up and who will run through a brick wall for you, you're gonna play harder. He might be one of the worst players in the NHL, but he's been a regular on some good teams in the NHL for a reason.

  17. Hearing them talk about Reeves makes me remember watching a game in person with Wade Belak on the leafs fight in the game scored in the game Gordie Howe hat trick, finishes it off with an assist, set the whole tone for the game got his name chanted, all from one guy who scores maybe five or six goals a year Fantastical, I think is the right word to explain it

  18. I can’t seem to find a problem with the way flights are dealt with, officiated and just plain done in the NHL. Nothing wrong with it fights staying in. “Love, a good tussle on Saturday night”

  19. “Me being stupid led to this wonderful opportunity” ought to be the subtitle to Steve’s biography

  20. You wanna sit ONCE at the glass. That's it.

Also, Leafs dialogue is always ridiculous early in the season. this week its Reaves, next week it'll be something else. By December they'll be comfortably top 10 and pushing up and none of it will matter.

  21. tbh people say Ottawa or Buffalo are the teams to watch, I say the canucks will be the team to watch if they keep this up.

  22. On the Carolina thing: It seems there's a big divide between the teams that are owned by NHL teams and those who aren't (Providence, Chicago, Colorado, Cleveland, Rockford, Grand Rapids, Springfield, Milwaukee, Lehigh Valley, Syracuse and Hershey) that basically boils down to this: NHL teams, for the most part, don't give a rat's ass about winning in the AHL. They want to see their prospects develop, more than anything else. Your AHL team is a Calder Cup contender with a young goalie on a heater that's carrying the team (Hello, Calgary)? If Mr. NHL Goalie gets hurt for a long time, sucks for the AHL team, he's gone for however long it takes. AHL team is suffering due to a dearth of talent? If the NHL team is doing well, who cares? That's how the NHL, for the most part, approaches the AHL. The AHL, of course, ESPECIALLY for those privately owned teams, DESPERATELY needs to win, so they can put butts in the seats. Look at the Stockton Heat for their whole time in Stockton: in 395 games, they went 206-170-24-12. And if you take away their ONE full season where their winning percentage went over .600 (cause 19-20 was… Y'know)? They were 161-154-19-10. They were AWFUL. And the attendance reflected that. They were bottom 10 in attendance EVERY year they were in Stockton. And that's for a team that was (and still is) owned by the same guy who owns the Flames. So you KNOW Murray Edwards doesn't care about the attendance numbers, or if his AHL team is doing well, as long as they're developing his players and not losing him windfalls of cash. Now you look at the Wolves and their owner, Don Levin. Because they're competitive, they average just over 7,700 fans a gane (excluding the 20-21 season, when they didn't play), compared to Stockton, who, under the same metrics, averaged LESS THAN HALF THAT, at just over 3000. Now, you say, exclude their last year, where they only had 1713. It's not much better: 3221 a game. Winning at the AHL level is intrinsically linked with good attendance, which, duh, means the owner makes more money. Chicago has ALWAYS prioritizing winning over development, which is why, in only 22 years of being in the AHL, they've had 6 different affiliates. Then you look at, say, Grand Rapids, who came in the same season. Same situation, right? Wrong. Similar, but different: Owned by a different person, affiliated with an NHL team, tries to ice a competitive team, but here's the kicker: They play nice with their NHL team. And, as such, they've been affiliated with ONE team in that same 22 year period.

TLDR: Carolina wants development, regardless of winning, and Chicago wants to win, regardless of prospects.

  23. Ryan Reaves had a 20 minute segment on the pod today, more than triple his ice time in tonight's game!
