Howden match penalty on Tanev – Have your say!

Brett Howden hit Branden Tanev in the neutral zone and there was definite shoulder to head contact. After review it was ruled a match penalty for an illegal check to the head. Was the match too harsh or just right? Suspension coming? Have your say!

  1. He initiated contact, took the eyes off the player and missed most of the body. MP seems fair.

  2. Easy call. Here in Sweden, a hit to the head is a 5+GM if the player makes an intentional hit where the hit is to the head, the player "owns the situation" and is indifferent to the result of the hit. The match penalty does not exist in the IIHF rule book. This is an intentional hit and not an accidental collision. He has full control of how the hit is to be delivered and he clearly does not care which part of the body he hits. Hence, ordering him to take a premature shower is the only reasonable call.

  3. Good call, I'd give him a game or two to think about it as well. Clearly not playing the puck, hit Tanev early (interference as well), and obviously knew what he was doing.

  4. Looked to me like Howden was making a move to the puck and Tanev turned into him. It almost looks like Howden was flinching away, even.
Nevertheless, it's a hit to the head. Probably the right call, but I can't imagine any suspension or fines.

  5. I love how Stone cries like a baby when he gets hit clean, but then Vegas players basically play like this all the time and seem to think it's ok. Also Pietrangelo two hand axing Draisaitl's hand because the Oilers were hitting him too hard. Biggest bunch of hypocrites in the league.
