I see the Oilers are going to be the Jekyll/Hyde team this year

The Oilers simply just own us, just tradition at this point

Here was me thinking new coaching staff could stop us getting murdered by the Oilers every time. Silly me.

Thought there was a lot to like. Loved how often we were creating chances in the offensive zone, loved how Fabbro has been playing, love the pace of play, but man this one sucked as soon as the Oilers got their first PP.

Defensively we were all over the place, and I especially thought Josi and Carrier had rough games when it came to their defensive positioning. We left the Oilers way too much space, ESPECIALLY on the penalty kill, to do work in the o-zone and you can’t do that when they have the two best players in the league on their team.

Offensively, someone’s gonna have to step up for this team as the season goes on. What good is having the best xG in the NHL (love that btw) if you can’t finish off any of the shots you’re producing? We made Jack Campbell look like a damn superstar tonight, and that’s saying something for a guy who had an .888 save percentage last year.

That all said, lot to like tonight, but a lot the team can improve on. Excited to see where the team goes from here on Thursday against the Rangers.

    That was straight ass.

That said, it looked on paper like we played a really good game. Saros had a rough one. A lot of chances. Campbell played well. And McDrai continued their terror streak against us. I still see a lot of spark and promise in this team but this may be a lean year.

    Also. Give us Karl Taylor.

Forsberg really has to step it up. I’ve seen him be dangerous but he needs to put the puck in the back of the net and he had way too many penalties tonight

I *was* excited when Forsberg re signed with us. Love the dudes play in the past, but he has left a lot to be desired

I could see Bruno pushing Forsberg down a line as a statement if he doesn’t start producing. For better or worse, winning is dependent on him finishing. Thankfully, only the scoresheet depends on it, the rest of the growth and development doesn’t.

Honestly, y’all need to get used to games like this. We’re a mediocre team propped up by excellent goaltending. I would bet money that the Preds have one of the worst offensive groups in the NHL – bottom 6 for sure. And it’s by design, as far as I can tell. Trotz won’t come out and say he’s rebuilding but he’s definitely, let’s say, “taking a break from competing.”

The best thing this team can do is take a BIG step back and lose a shit ton of games. We need to continue to sell off what we can (Saros for sure, Barrie, Trenin, Sissons and McDonagh) and just eat dirt for a few seasons.

If you want to understand my point of view, look at this way. We all want to make the playoffs. But the preds have done that over the past 4 seasons. Now imagine instead of getting our shit stuffed in the opening round of the playoffs all those years, the Preds spent the past 4 seasons tanking and had drafted players like Stutzle, Luke Hughes, Brant Clarke, Shane Wright, Conner Bedard. Instead, we’ve got a handful of 1st who we’re hoping will shake out into middle six wingers.

Personally I’m tired of this team slowly circling the drain. It’s time to shake things up and root for the tank.

The biggest fear of the Oilers is you have is getting ding-a-linged by McDavid or Drai in the open ice. They got one of those in this game. You try, of course, but there’s not much you can do about it.

Where the Preds got killed time and time again over recent years vs EDM is you lose a guy away from the puck, but in zero seconds flat, he invariably ends up with the puck on his stick and he always nails the open shot. Always.

Almost all of this is their skill but some of it is bad luck combined. On the second goal, they got lucky with the bounces but the Oilers were trying to do what they did, and I think it was Hyman who was in the perfect spot.

Defenders can’t jump in to help other defenders because as soon as you do, they are getting your initial man the puck. The Oilers make you stay very disciplined.

You can’t let them set up in the offensive zone very much and you surely can’t take a bunch of penalties.

Thankfully, every team is not the Oilers. The way you beat them is by putting goals in the net.

But the Preds cannot finish. It was going to be an obvious problem in July. They bought out their leading goal scorer the past two years (both teams that couldn’t score enough to begin with) and didn’t replace him. Now Forsberg has been ice cold but he’s getting shots and he won’t be shooting 0% forever.

They want the young guys to step up obviously, but so far, only Novak has been good and Parssinen has put in a couple of goals.

Until they get some offensive production from the young players, they will keep playing pretty good 5v5 hockey and not getting a lot of goals.
