The New York Islanders Played Strong Team Defense and Blanked the Coyotes 1-0

Ilya Sorokin made 14 saves to earn the shutout and Mathew Barzal scored the only goal of the game as the New York Islanders blanked the Arizona Coyotes 1-0.

The Isles are off to a 2-0 start on the season. We break down the reasons for the Isles success and discuss some things they could have done better. They managed the win without Scott Mayfield but Samuel Bolduc got the job done. We also have our hero and goat of the game.

Plus we discuss a nice career milestone for Matt Martin and we have our first Farm Report as we discuss all things Bridgeport Islanders.

All this and more on today’s Locked On Islanders Podcast with Gil Martin.

  1. Isle shut out. Score one goal on the pp. Make 1-0 lead hold up. Barzal scores the goal assist for bo. Checks all the boxes. Efficient isles win.

  2. Islanders were lucky to get past Coyotes without giving up a goal. So hopefully will be able to get a few more next game. Sorokin played better than Osgood when he was here or getting his Shut Outs for Detroit with 15 Saves hehe ;). I was hoping for Brock Nelson to get a goal heh. I was a bit nervous as Dobson played well but his partner Pelech or so botched an easy play to keep it in zone. I was never big on him or like Poloch or how spell it. I guess they split them up to try to get a bit more scoring overall? Engvall I'm glad is working out pretty well :). Man Kvasha that is a name from past hehe. I would have thought Adam Creightton or something would be who people compared to :). I was not a big fan of his though. I was happy when they traded for him then signed him for a fair market price too :). Devils game will be really interesting :).

  3. Pleasant and a bit frustrating to watch. Coyotes' goaltender at times seemed like Hasek reborn, but still a bit worrying that we can't score more and 3 open goals missed. Great defence which is a great baseline to succeed.

  4. WEAK Win!.. i mean c'mon a 1spot vs an Arizona team who Lost to the NYRangers the night before!!😳😏🤦🏻‍♂️ Isles were on 2 days rest too…. NOT GOOD smh wait til they play JerseyDevils and Colorado etc etcs 1 goal NOT going to get it done.

  5. Congratulations to Matt Martin on 900 games! PP goal, and shut down defense equal Isles win. Everyone played well. More offense would be nice, but that's always been the problem. Unlucky on a few that went thru the crease. Can't complain about 32 shots. Go Isles

  6. I’m sure you noticed the much-improved movement on the PP (Ironically, Barzal scored on a one-timer) but I’ll take it! I noticed they we are cycling much, much better with & without the puck on the PP so far, this early in the season. (I hope it stays that way) For a moment there they stopped cycling on the PP, literally a split second & I’m like “Nooooo don’t go back to standing still!” But they continued to cycle. I guess it’s just my NY Isles PP PTSD from last year kicking in. Lol, nah they played a great game from the blueline out! Zero complaints today & I’m looking forward to playing the NJ Devils. As the legendary Bart Scott once said “can’t wait!”

  7. Good morning Gil, what a fantastic game last night by the ny islanders 🎉that had to be lane lambert best game as a islander coach. It seam like they did not make one mistake. Hopefully we can a few wins at home 🎉happy birthday ken morrow! You are also doing a fantastic job Gil. Let’s go islanders ❤

  8. Any time your netminder gets a shutout. (Because it’s so hard to do) I always give them the first Star, but you’re choice of Barzy’s a good 👍 one

  9. It's hard for me to get excited by these 2 wins against 2 teams that missed the playoffs last year. I think 9 of the Isles first 13 games are against teams that missed the PO's. We'll have a better idea after the Devils game. I think the Isles will win if they play solid D and are physical.
What gave me hope is seeing the Isles really move the puck in the offensive zone, get shots on goal and retrieve the puck to keep the pressure up. I saw a few shots that could have gone in but hit someone in front, and even a few miss the net by just a little. If the Isles keep getting these chances, some of those will go in. I'm seeing some life in the lines Lane has, and even some chemistry. I'm looking forward to the Friday and Saturday games.

  10. I dont believe in this team but Iam pleasantly surprised so far
    …LGI

  11. I get what you’re sayin Gil. (I really do) However, do you know how hard it is to score on an excellent 6’1” goalie, let alone a 6’4” professional goaltender? I struggled with scoring on excellent 6’1” or 6’2” goalies. I played against a 6’3” netminder one time and we lost that game like 5-0 and we were shooting from good angles, great angles and really bad angles. We just kept shooting it & we could not score. Again, I get it, these guys are the best hockey players in the world, but I can’t lean on them too much for not scoring more than one goal. This is the most I’ve ever seen Barzy shooting the puck and I hope he continues to do so & he doesn’t fall back on his fundamentals of passing the puck while he has great scoring opportunities. Honestly, I think scoring that one-timer will encourage him to keep shooting. How good has Bo Horvat been, man is that guy a good player! He’s played great in both games so far, like really good! The scoring will start coming in time. He shoots too much for it not to happen. Let’s go, Islanders!

  12. Wait 2-0 to start the season and Dobson played solid in his own end!?!? If I’m sleeping please do not wake me!!!

  13. Unfortunately I’m gonna miss the Friday game! We have a few shows in north carolina. My guitarist is a rangers fan so it’s always fun playing a show when the islanders win and the rangers lose lol

  14. Hi Gil! What can ya say. The defensive play was excellent. Albeit Coyotes played night before but they’re young, talented and fast and were simply stopped in their tracks. 4 goals in two games—-1-0 win—we know we know

  15. Accident cut myself off Gil! Bottom line—I feel the scoring will come. Bo n Barzie? Two games now—let’s be patient. Please—-please take Simon off that line. Gauthier or Whally when ready. Simon is just not my hockey cup of tea. He’s not physical—-not a scorer, he’s soft and I’m just not sure where he fits. Take care Gil!!

  16. I was at the game. You're right that Sorokin wasn't tested a whole lot but the Islanders didn't have too many high danger chances against Karel Vejmelka. Most of the saves Vejmelka made didn't require a lot of effort. I was also at the game last year when Vejmelka and the Coyotes shut out the Islanders by a score of 2-0. It was impressive to see the Islanders shut down Clayton Keller and Logan Cooley. Cooley is gonna be an amazing player for a long time. Arizona's GM Bill Armstrong did a great job of restocking the cupboard by trading for so many draft picks. They're not a playoff contender yet but they're doing an amazing job of building for the future.
