You mentioned you are baffled and I will give you my thoughts. I think it was a mistake for the Oilers to come to training camp early.
It’s a long, hard season and the Oilers have a lot of vets now. My understanding is the Oilers are doing a zone right now instead of man to man. Maybe a hybrid is the solution while they receive the new system data. In basketball there is something called a 4 + 1. It’s a zone defence and then msn on msn your best player against there best player.
Ultimately tho. The Oilers need to remember hockey is meant to be fun and the media and fans might want to keep that in mind also, not that they will mind you.
It's almost like it's more than x's & o's, there is something behind the scenes. Two of the four games, it looked like public skating.

People keep complaining about how bad the goaltending is, but when you have the top players in the NHL, you have to score.
people don't understand. watch how edmonton is playing and has been playing, especially in game 1 in that blowout. basically what's going on is the Oilers are attempting to play zone instead of man on man. playing zone is what the avs, golden knights, devils, lightning and other powerhouses have been doing and perfecting for years now, similar to how the neutral zone trap was adopted in the 90's.
it'll probably take around 25 games to figure it out to use their new strategy(s) effectively, they'll make the playoffs and then lose to either the golden knights or avs in the 2nd round or conference finals. this year isn't their year, but if they can better their strategy, and get more reliable goaltending, i can see the Oilers being cup contenders for 2025.
I'm an Oilers fan since they came into the league…and the ONLY Cup they will have is between their legs. Hard facts!

Oilers need better defence, bring in a shutdown defenceman paired with Darnell nurse. Getting rid of ceci is the top tier for oilers right now. Oilers need to play better starting now. They need to be the oilers that we been seeing for 2 years now. Wake up boy's!! Let's getting rolling 💯
The goalie dynamic on this team is paramount. BAD goals effect forwards, flow of a game, momentum. Over the course of the season they'll outscore opponents but right now its goal tending and poor D/penalties landing them where they are.
