Winnipeg Jets vs. Detroit Red Wings | Live Play-By-Play & Reactions

Thursday is the first of two regular-season meetings between the teams with the Red Wings visiting Winnipeg on Dec. 20. The teams split two high-scoring games last season with Detroit prevailing 7-5 at home.

Mark Scheifele (2G, 2A), and Nikolaj Ehlers (2G, 2A) led the Jets with four points in the series. Neal Pionk had a goal and two assists and was a team-best plus-3. Connor Hellebuyck started both in net and had a 4.09 goals-against average and .830 save per centage.

Red Wings No. 1 Ville Husso started one of the two and allowed five goals on 37 shots in a victory to improve to 1-1 career against the Jets with a 4.06 GAA and .887 SV. If Husso has a good season, Detroit should return to the playoffs for the first time since 2016. The Wings have some very good young forwards like Alex DeBrincat, Dylan Larkin and Lucas Raymond.

DeBrincat was acquired in July from Ottawa and immediately signed to a four-year extension with an average annual value of $7.875 million (US). That deal cost the Wings forward Dominik Kubalík, defenceman Donovan Sebrango, a conditional first-round pick and a fourth-round pick in 2024 to Ottawa, but it has been worth it so far.

The home team is 5-2 in the past seven meetings.

Winnipeg Jets
Winnipeg won its second game in a row Tuesday, 4-2 over St. Louis. David Gustafsson and Mason Appleton scored 18 seconds apart early in the first period, the fastest two goals by the club since Dec. 15, 2019 (0:16 from Logan Shaw and Patrik Laine). Kyle Connor added his fourth goal of the season and Morgan Barron clinched it with his second, coming on an empty net. Connor’s 213 goals since he entered the NHL in 2016-17 are the second most among all Jets players in that span behind Mark Scheifele’s 218. Neal Pionk had two assists. Connor Hellebuyck stopped 18 of 20 shots to improve to 3-2-0 with a 2.99 GAA and an .881 SV. Winnipeg played without Coach Rick Bowness, who took a leave of absence after his wife, Judy, had a seizure on Sunday evening. Not clear when he might be back. The Jets are 0-4 in their past four Thursday games.

Detroit Red Wings
Detroit had its five-game winning streak snapped Tuesday in a 5-4 home OT loss to struggling Seattle. The Wings scored three times in the third to take a 4-3 lead but allowed the tying goal at 18:38 and then the winner at 4:55 of OT. Detroit was 3-for-6 on the power play but allowed Seattle to finish 2-for-5. Alex DeBrincat was attempting to become the first player in NHL history with multiple goals in each of his first four home games with a franchise but he was held to one goal. The trade acquisition leads the league with nine. He did miss practice Wednesday with an illness. Dylan Larkin extended his season-opening point streak to seven games with a goal and two assists. The last Red Wings player with a longer such run was Henrik Zetterberg with 17 in a row in 2007-08. Veteran defender Jeff Petry was out with an upper-body injury. Ville Husso suffered his first loss since the season opener to fall to 3-1-1 with a 3.38 GAA and .893 SV. Detroit is 1-5 in its past six Thursday games.
