The Detroit Lions shocked us all when they drafted Iowa LB Jack Campbell with the 18th overall pick in the 1st round of the 2023 NFL Draft. He’s being seen as the next great leader for the Lions’ defense, but what should Lions fans realistically expect from Campbell? Can he translate his high-level football IQ and show why he was a no-brainer 1st round selection for Brad Holmes or will he fall short of what we expect him to be? Meko gives his breakdown of this rangy and impactful linebacker and sets a floor-and-ceiling comparison for the young rookie.

7:58 In Luke G’s Jack Campbell Analysis video, there were examples where Jack stood in place for seconds after the snap, but it wasn’t clear what Jacks responsibility was. When the play is going to the other side of the field, Jacks responsibility may have been to cover against the play coming back. Not sure.

just let him develop. Don't put unnecessary expectations on him . Fans expectations for 1st round pick are though the roof. If cambell can develop into a above average or better lb he was a good pick .
Campbell said that Jack Campbell is game one ready.
Let’s go! Detroit Lions 🦁 FTW
Watching him get manhandled by TEs was discouraging. A simple swipe or tug would have gotten him off the block. That is fixable though. What is most important is that he be at the right place at the right time. He’s got all the between the ears stuff.
Good point about leverage. The Lions O line will teach him that!
Linemen work alone linebackers work off the Linemen.meaning a good deal of his success will be dictated on how the line performs.when healthy are line was solid we have added pieces and got a year under last years rookies belts.also he will be practicing against a top 5 offensive line giving him a great deal of knowledge and techniques because it and or they want be easy on him anyway so many new Lion's channels it's crazy.people just riding the wave just popping up out the Honolulu blue lol.we will see who lasts #Onepride
Good points. I think Jack will be frustratingly good in his first season. You will see so much talent but he will have some places he fails, he not complete yet. He loves the game and I believe he will fix his deficiencies. It think it will take a season. I expect him on the field year one, especially in passing downs, but he will likley be rotated out on some running situations. But then again, he may just find his way and be better there too. We will see.
Campbell was a real reach should of been dt/nt instead think we needed a true man coverage linebackers who can blitz like Simpson Henley pappoe overshown
Just a thought – I recall one of the coaches saying last year that the 4-5yd gains we were getting from our RB’s were fine BUT they should have been gains of 8-9yds. That stuck with me and I was pretty sure they were going to sign or draft a RB this year who could get those extra yds. They did both.
Out of curiosity, maybe you can do a deeper dive into some of our running plays from last season to identify if there were plays where Jahmyr or Monty prob would have gotten more yds or even huge gains or TD’s than Jamaal W. or even Swift for that matter?
Maybe you can identify plays where the lane was huge but missed or the vision wasn’t so good or the speed just wasn’t there?
I’m of the opinion we upgraded the RB position in terms of speed, elusiveness, receiving and vision by letting go of Swift and Williams. And I’m excited to see the 4-5yd runs turn into 8-9yd chunks and longer.
Excellent takes. Instant sub. Looking at your previous vids soon. Thanks for your work
Folks buy into the narrative that these first two picks were reaches, until there’s a new narrative. And, by the way, completely ignoring that this is the Lions’ brain trust full-time job…one they aced their first two drafts. But, when you disagree with them, they’re incompetent. Got it.
I don't like comparing incoming players to current or former players, let's just hope he's as good as expectations and see where it.goea. he's not Luke Keithley, he's Jack Cambell. Gibbs is a lot like Swift but hopefully better and most importantly healthy, Swift was a good player, he just didn't stay healthy. You could count on Swift to be that player 2 or 3 games a year. We need Gibbs to be that 7 or 8 at least. I believe they can fix these problems with Cambell
So much was said about Bryce Young not having a good O Line but not as much about what Gibbs had to do with the abilities he has. Thanks for bringing this up.
The only thing Luke and Jack have in common is theyre both white and both got mentioned in this video other than that not much.
Campbell is much bigger and while not as fast just as athletic. Plus they play different positions.
TJ Watt has a much closer athletic profile than LK but obv different play style.
Campbell is a unicorn. With his lenght and athleticism zone coverage is why he was drafted in round 1.
