Adam Johnson sadly passed away yesterday following a tragic on ice accident. Johnson previously played with the Pittsburgh Penguins and was only 29 years old.
In the travel hockey league I play you have to wear hockey neck gaurds. I always wear neck guards but refs aren’t so strict about it. It is so tragic to see people go off the earth in this fashion. You go from playing in your dreams to on the ground bleeding. REST IN PEACE.
Thoughts and prayers go to his family and friends. Leagues need to start mandating neck guards immediately. This really isn’t a “one in a million” freak accident. That artery on our necks is rather large. I hope they make changes soon for players safety. The game is not worth the risk of that happening ever. Rest in peace.
Skates are never throat high around the blueline or in the neutral zone, usually just around the boards, unless it's figure skating. That was a bush league attempted leg whip pick with 30mm sharpened steel blades by Steelers penalty leader and last years EHL penalty leader Matt Petgrave, who has a checkered suspension-filled resume. Neck guards seriously aren’t uncomfortable (at least for me) in the slightest. I’d recommend you go out and purchase one, it might just save your life.
As they said its a freak accident. And there will always be a risk to some extent and its relatively known so choose a diff sport if freak accident is too much. Neckgaurds would soon become cages and mouthgaurds and no fighting and no hitting. We love the sport for what it is lets not change it because some person in a boardroom wants to play hero
Proud Lightning Fan in the UK for the last 29 years and truly deeply saddened by the news .Sincerest condolences to Adams family and friends .I truly feel for all those fans at the game who had to witness it all especially for the younger fans it must have been absolutely horrific. R.I.P Adam such a young kid with his whole life ahead of him such a tragic and sad day for all of us in the Hockey World family 😢😢.

Neck guards are like the new halos in F1. 99% of the time, you don't need it, but you're extremely glad you do the other 1%

i cant imagine the pain he felt.. poor guy. i hope the guy who was apart of the accident is okay. the guilt he probably feels. rest in peace adam❤
I'd advise people to watch the incident. It was clearly intentional, and as such, charges for involuntary manslaughter should be pressed.
