Connor McMichael getting time in at center at practice. Neck protection equipment.

In this edition of Locked on Capitals Dan talks about how Connor McMichael and Nick Backstrom were alternating through at the center position and what that really means. Nick Backstrom has pretty much been absent from the score sheet this season. This is Connor McMichael’s time to shine. Late Dan talks about neck protection equipment and how Warroad a company owned by TJ Oshie sold out of neck protection equipment after an accident on the ice. To close out the show Dan talks about what the Caps need to do to keep winning.

  1. I agree with you on McMichael and Backstrum. It's time for Backstrum to retire my opinion. This should have started last year but different coach and process. It's great they are doing it now though. Let's see what young talent we have and their potential.

  2. One thing I've really liked about Michaels play this season is his tenacity. He's been a lot more physical in front of the net, he's getting in good clean hits. He's involved in post whistle scrums. I really like seeing that from him. He and Phillips also seem to have some good chemistry too

  3. Hey Dan! Big fan. Been listening for years almost everyday, specifically on the Spotify end! But excited to be here.

You were spot on with your points. And you had been talking about wanting to see McMichael at his natural position for a while now. With the statement of Backstrom today it definitely becomes clearer and clearer that it’s happening. I might be getting ahead of myself, but it feels like Backstrom is going to retire soon.

I don’t know about you, but it’s a sad day for me. I grew up watching Backstrom and Ovi kill it. Even though I know it’s probably best for the team, it’s just really a sad day.

    Great show!!!

  4. Dan, why is no one talking about the egregious act of the player that caused the skate contacting the young mans neck. It was not an accident, and it seems to me that it’s being downplayed. It was basically manslaughter.

  5. In terms of the quality of sports, I do not like all the protections modern sports puts in. There has been hitting taken out of the game which I don't like.
However, I'm also sure some ex-players who cannot think properly or cannot walk properly due to injuries would view this differently. And there is always the question of youth sports and whether parents want their kid to play a physical sport if the parents don't have a sense that their kids are adequately protected.
