It’s so obviously a case of fake accidental contact, where a player knows exactly where the other guy is, where he’s going and where to put themselves to make contact but then try to **sell** a body language that pretends like they’re just minding their own business, unaware of everything. With the puck completely elsewhere and the play going the exact other way – there’s simply no reason for Aho to be looking the way he’s looking, headed the direction he’s headed and be placed where he is in his own zone unless he’s trying to put a body on Fox. It’s not exactly a suspendsble offense. But it’s absolutely a penalty. I don’t know how an objective observer sees this and doesn’t wonder what the hell is going on with this non call.

Setting a pick, textbook interference. Canes were playing on edge all game and this is one of those plays that’s a penalty but generally doesn’t get called too frequently. When you have incompetent refs that are game managing, it starts to naturally get more risky.
**Did Aho mean to injure? In my opinion, no** – but this was interference without question and it ended up putting one of the best defenseman in the league out.
I wouldn’t be opposed to a 2 game suspension or something short to set a precedent and keep plays like this from happening more frequently.

Experience Canes Hockey. Low key the dirtiest team in the league — and I don’t mean that in an intent to injure way, more of a commit so many tiny infractions the refs can’t possibly call all of them kinda way. Illegal picks, hooks, trips, just any way to slow a guy down in a way they *could* be called for a penalty. It’s a smart strategy tbh, playing on that edge, but holy shit it’s so annoying to play against and frustrating because of how refs don’t call by the book, they manage games.

I think Rupp is spot on. I don’t think it was intentionally done to injure Fox, but it’s still a penalty and dangerous play (not even getting into all of the high sticks they got away with all night long).
My issue is that Aho didn’t answer the bell when challenged. As a player, when any sort of knee on knee or hit from behind (intentional or not) takes place and you’re allowed to stay in the game while the other team loses that player, you HAVE to answer that challenge to drop the gloves from the other team. It’s like an unwritten rule of the game.
It wasn’t even like the Rangers were sending Trouba after him. Laf was pretty much the guy chosen to make things right and challenge Aho. He wimped out. I have more issue with that then anything else.
I don’t believe they play again until January, but hockey players have long memories. Will be interesting to see what happens.

With very, very few exceptions I really don’t think NHL players are out there *trying* to injure other players, and nothing I’ve seen from Aho makes me think he’s one of those rare exceptions. That said, this is unquestionably a penalty and probably something that the NHL should look at a retroactive punishment for – I know that fans hate the idea of some players getting special treatment but I think it’s in the league’s interest to make clear that if you injure one of the best players in the game with a reckless play they are going to take a second and third look and if warranted hand down a real punishment. Also, between Aho not being penalized in the game and then dodging the fight the Canes have to know that if Aho lowers his head for one second the next time these two teams play Trouba is going to fucking wreck him with an open ice hit.

Knowing the NHL, they WILL do something about it. They will fine Adam Fox $5,000, the maximum allowable under the CBA, for embellishment along with all the other high sticks that weren’t called last night.
Even Joe Micheletti was saying during the game that the high sticks were NOT penalties because they were follow through?! Makes no sense at all, fuck the game management, if a single team commits 10 penalties in a row then that team should be shorthanded 10 times in a row!
BTW, Aho along with other stars in the NHL are known to be dirty players. Aho, Malkin, Draisaitl, and even Crosby and Ovechkin have been known to be dirty players at times.

Ill be honest, I have more of an issue with the fact that Aho failed to answer the bell when he was challenged rather than the actual collision itself. He clearly intended to interfere with Foxy. I don’t believe there was a clear intent to injure but there was absolutely a clear intent to interfere with. If that happens, and you injure the player you interfered with, you answer the bell. No questions asked. Lacking to do so really shows the type of player he is.
