It was the goal heard round the world, a viral sensation before “going viral” was a thing.

Michigan’s Mike Legg scored the goal of the decade on March, 24, 1996 in an NCAA Tournament matchup between the Wolverines and the University of Minnesota, a goal so famous that it is often simply referred to as “The Michigan.”

With the Wolverines trailing, Legg pulled up behind the net, but with four Gophers milling around down low he took matters into his own hands, lifting the puck off of the ice on the blade of his stick and throwing it into the top corner of the net to tie the game.

Minnesota Gophers goalie Steve DeBus didn’t see it coming, throwing his glove hand up after the fact, the puck already bouncing at the bottom of the net.

  1. there was no way for the fans to see a replay back then at the game. most of them probly had no idea what they saw till sports center the next morning.

  2. Some great American moments were followed by great calls by commentators like miracle on ice and secretariats Preakness win … but not this moment .

  3. The exact moment I became a Michigan fan. I was 11 years old, at my grams house watching this game. I remember my gram saying “holy buckets” when they showed the replay.

  4. Decades later forward Brendan Morrison and goalie Marty Turco – both of whom had long careers in the NHL – came back to Ann Arbor in celebration of that championship season. Mike Legg was with them, and all three players took a shot at “Score-O” during a game intermission. They did well:

  5. Wow 27 years later and Kent Johnson of the Columbus Blue Jackets decides to do the Michigan today! Crazy move!

  6. Amazing that he did this in 1996 & 25 years it took for it to start to become mainstream in pro hockey. Amazing goal so ahead of its time.

  7. This should be called the "Legg Lift"…. Not the Michigan c'mon

  8. How is this such a high-quality video when most 90s sports clips look more like the moon landing?

  9. My boy started when he was 4 and now 8, he jumps over the boards like you're supposed to and practices doing the Michigan, ever since I showed him.

  10. My dad and I got tickets to this game. Four rows back behind the goalie, only problem was it was the Michigan goalie and the goal was scored on the other side of the ice!😞

  11. Witnessing the game being changed in the moment! The disbelief on the announcers voice makes it so special!
