Toronto Maple Leafs top line takes charge in comeback victory over Tampa Bay Lightning

The Toronto Maple Leafs overcame a brutal first period and a 4-1 deficit to beat the Tampa Bay Lightning. Mike DiStefano and David Morassutti look at what the Leafs did right to get themselves in a position to make the comeback looking specifically at their response in the second period. In their Three Stars of the Game, Mike and Dave look at specific contributions made by Joseph Woll and Calle Jarnkrok at key moments. To end the show, Mike and Dave give high praise for the play of the top line and how Matthew Knies’ presence should bring excitement to what he could do with Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner going forward. They also look at another brutal start for Ilya Samsonov against the Tampa Bay Lightning and how the team should proceed with him going forward.

  1. good on the crowd for giving them healthy well deserved boos after that brutal 1st period. maybe that snapped them out of their coma

  2. When the Leafs' offense gets going it it an inspiring sight. But some teams are able to tie them up and frustrate every effort. I really hope this 3rd line of Domi, Jaernkrok, and Richardson jells because because it is the answer to providing complementary support for the big guns. The 2nd line will depend on Bertuzzi fitting in or not.

  3. Marner plays well. Leafs win. It is almost like those to two things are connected.

Benching Reaves isn't really the solution. Sitting him is. He should be used sparingly, not every game.

The Domi line looked really good, it certainly deserves a chance going forward. The questions with Robertson are does he keep up the defensive play and can he stay healthy. That is what has always buried him before.

I feel for Samsonov, he was so good last year. The Leafs can't ride Woll like a horse. They need for Sammy to find his game.

"We have to get up at 8:00 AM." Clearly you don't know when normal people get up for work.

The Leafs need a proper Dman. Rielly has been great, but they need a real stay at home guy to pair with Klingberg.

  4. Thank the Hockey god's we didn't give Sammy a long contract.
Next season I'd rather see a trio of Woll, Jones and Murray for a combined 3m…or less.
It's cash we could throw Willy's way

  5. Mike and Dave I have a question for you about Sammy what the rules on sending him down for a condition stint or it only aloud after a injury because we need to do something and am not sure he's tradable

  6. only took 12 games but finally Keefer moved the players to there lines we need them The first line Knies, Matthew's, Mitch was amazing. Line 2 Willy, JT, Bert had good moments but not there greatest game Bert brought them down. The third line Robertson, Domi, Jarnkrok looked great. The 4th line Grogor the only good player

  7. Am done with the Reavo and Klingberg experience hell am very close to putting Bert and Domi on the list. List Reavo hasn't had any toughness since the first 2 game

  8. Good Video Clicked Like . I expect the regular season to be good but this team is probably the softest team in the history of the NHL they have ZERO grit and it will be another early exit come play off time . Mb REAVES was the wrong guy but that does not mean they dont need a few more guys exactly like REAVES but guys that can play more .

  9. SO, I'm interested in what people think about this … Woll comes in, holds the fort, and the Leafs come back to win. All good! Of course the other factor is that the Leafs sucked in the first period other than the 1st line. So, do I read anything into the fact that when Woll came in, the Leafs played a hell of alot better? I'm not saying that the turnaround is all on Woll … but did we see the Leafs play with more confidence BECAUSE Woll was in goal? Is that part of the story? Interested in people's thoughts.
On Revo … there has to be a reason why every player has a spot on the roster. Right now, there is no real reason for him to be there. We have to remember that this was one of Treliving's first signings, that the season is long, that Keefe is a patient guy, and that Reeves is an outstanding teamate. All factors in the mix. However, you'd have to be a blind man not to see the problem here. I think there is more road to hoe before the press box and a trade. Its not like they have a bunch of top flight kids pushing the envelope.

  10. I like having Reaves in the line-up as a presence to be utilized – if needed. I find he played a decent role last night when he was on the ice, with simple puck dumps and attempts at cycling (keeping it simple). I think last night was more of 'game management' as the Leafs seem to lose the lead quickly so Keefe kept the foot on the gas. I believe this is a good strategy as it allows Keefe to get more minutes out of, and more situations for Gregor – who looked good/dynamic.

  11. Now watch you guys completely change your tune on the leafs over 1 win lol. After the 4th goal I stopped watching I don’t care that they won. I am done watching this team until the playoffs. GO CANUCKS!!!!

  12. I have been asking for Domi at centre since the beginning what a difference. I don't think defenceman will be a tremendous issue with Jarnkrok on the 3rd line with them and producing more offense with some GA is better then less GA and no offense. Also reference Nylander Tavares line GF/GA. Is negative but still works.

Also liked the top 2 lines however I still would rather have Marner and Tavares together and Nylander and Matthews for reasons below:

    – Matthews is better defensively will support Nylander

    – Marner is better defensively to support Tavares and help him and bertuzzi to be in the right positions to score. ( I think Bert is to slow in his processing of the game and his foot speed compared to matthews and marner (ie nick ritchie)

    – I think matthews and marner is to predictable as the season progress and teams figure it out in February during their regular slump. So having their chemistry during the power play and when down a goal in the 3rd only keeps teams on their toes.

Lastly Reaves and Bertuzzi needs to be a net front more often then not because neither of the play is conducive to play style of the team. So I think they need to do what knies does and forcheck and get in front to screen and hammer the rebounds home.

For example Gregor carries in with his speed, Reaves gets in front when Gregor shoots. Same for Bert when Marner* carries it in.

So I think the final lines with some upgrades be Trade deadline on D and depth.

    Knies Matthew Nylander
    Bertuzzi Tavares Marner
    Robertson Domi Jarnkrok
    Gregor Kampf Reaves*

    Reilly Liljegrin
    Brodie Klingberg
    Giordano McCabe

I think this needs more balance. Knies, Bertuzzi, Jarnkrok, Kampf are the corner guys (forcheck)

Nylander, Marner, Domi, Gregor are the play makers

Matthews, Tavares, Robertson, guy who is not Reaves are the scoring threats.

Defence needs better balance to Brodie I think just needs less minutes to put with Klingberg or McCabe depending on who's more of a liability and I found Reilly and become quite a bit better defensively but feel we need some serious upgrades. Also honestly pissed about the Reaves signing Lafferty would of been so more effective as a Gregor Kampf Lafferty line. (Speedy forcheck grit line)

Would look to do a Liligren, prospect and 1st for Pesce.

And couple depth adds like nico Sturm, Mccbain, Max jones, Pezzetta

  13. That was such a great example of who the Leafs are.

They can tie a game, but cannot take control.

They look weaker than ever. It's crazy how they can win a game, in the ugliest fashion and you give them credit.

Team has no chemistry. If Matthews wasn't scoring twice a night they have no shot any game this year…
