Ball Arena is now as old as McNichols was

As of today, Pepsi Center/Ball Arena is as old as McNichols was when its doors closed. Great memories in both buildings, but I think it’s safe to say the new barn has aged a lot better.

I’ll never forget my first hockey game the inaugural season at McNichols 95-96.

I suppose it’s easy to tell when a couple of kids had never been to a game before, so some kind man in a white polo shirt with and Avs logo came over and game pucks to my brother and I.

I doubt this person could tell we didn’t have an ice rink/let alone hockey pucks where we grew up and hadn’t even learned hockey was a sport until the team was announced as moving to Denver 4-5 months earlier, so had only ever seen hockey on TV.

This moment made hockey real and tangible and between that, and having Patrick Roy touch my hand with his glove walking back to the locker room after a period, going down that old aisle, was when my love for this game was started and cemented. I’ve never turned back since and am so happy to have such a wonderful team to cheer on!

I later found out who that nice man was that gave my brother and I pucks; It was Peter McNab.

I do miss the stairs into McNichols. It felt like you were ascending into something great. Of course I was also much smaller then
